About Enlarging Images Frequently we receive questions about what Imagener can and can not do. Many times people have accidentially removed images from their hard disk but still have the thumbnails of those images and expect Imagener to be able to enlarge these thumbnails to the size of the original image with the original quality. This is technically impossible for any software to do. To explain why, consider the following example. Suppose the image below is a 4X8 pixel black and white image of the Empire State Building. Most people can associate the shape of the black pixels in the image below with images they remember of the Empire State Building. Imagener however sees this image as just a 4X8 pixel image. It has no knowledge of what the Empire State Building is supposed to look like: Suppose Imagener would enlarge this image 200%, or to 8X16 pixels. The result could be: However, with the technology Imagener employs it will evaluate the pixels in their environment, i.e. compare them with pixels around them and the result probably would be more like: When enlarging to 400% the result could be: However, in this 400% enlargement anyone can tell that windows and other details that should be visible are missing. The reason they are missing and never can never appear in an enlargment is that they are not visible in the original image. The image information simply does not exist in the first place. In other words, Imagener (or any software) can not be expected to 'invent' detail that is not available in the original image. For this reason Imagener will have much better results on small images that do contain all of the image information that you want to enlarge. Imagener (and all image software) needs sufficient detail in pixels to properly enlarge. |
